back in europe, i was wondering why i could hear so much grunting and whooping sounds.

it seems because it’s pannage season, an ancient practice mentioned in the domesday book (1086) where pigs are let loose in the forest in autumn to eat the fallen acorns. and it being a mast year there’s plenty of them.

this is great for the pigs except they have to have several nose rings clipped into their noses to prevent them rooting too much and causing damage to grassland.

no one likes a pig who roots too much, and i do know one such pig personally, but there are pigs everywhere now, grunting and rooting. not enough nose rings obvs.
